House Passes Bill Withdrawing Troops From Iraq, 218-212!!!

by S-Q @10:45 AM MDT

Raw Story

The Democratic leadership in the House of Representatives succeeded in passing a controversial supplemental war budget that includes a timeline to remove troops from Iraq by August 2008. Fourteen Democrats voted against the funding bill, and two Republicans voted in favor of it.

By a 218-212 vote, a bare-bones majority, House Democrats succeeded in passing their supplemental appropriations bill, titled the U.S. Troop Readiness, Veterans' Health, and Iraq Accountability Act, which funds the war in Iraq.

"My grandmother told me, ‘you’re put on this Earth to make a difference.’ We made a difference today," said Rep. John Murtha (D-PA), the Defense Appropriations Subcommittee Chairman who championed the bill.

He added, "This bill sets benchmarks and requires accountability from the Iraqi government. It forces the Iraqis to fight their own war and to take over their own country."

It's about time there are some set guidelines to get our troops out of Iraq! This is a beginning and hopefully, they will bring them home sooner than August 2008..

S-Q,
I fear it will be later rather than sooner. They were under pressure to do something and this was the best they could do. That said, at least they managed to get their own version of compromise. It's also very close to the election and my fear is that GWB will (again) claim the victory. Saying his strength, or whatever, is what made it happen.
But it's sure a whole lot better than this time last year. It's a great first step even if largely just to draw the line in the sand.

Hi Kit!

Yes, better than a year ago and at least a beginning. I wish they would get our troops out of Iraq this year. *sigh*

Bush has vowed to veto it and the majority Pelosi secured is too small to override veto.

More here.

Anthony:

I just read that and Bush always vows to veto everything with the 110th Congress!

S-Q: Kucinich says that the only way to stop a war in Iran, let alone reverse the one in Iraq, is to impeach the president.

I have a feeling that Bush had a real motive to fire those attorneys because of their investigations and if that is the case...he could be impeached!

By the way, S-Q, have you seen this clip from The Daily Show? It's about bush's pro... , I mean, reasonable proposal to congress. Ha! Ha!
