Senate panel clears way for subpoenas in probe of U.S. attorney firings

WASHINGTON — The Senate Judiciary Committee Thursday cleared the way for subpoenas compelling five Justice Department officials and six of the U.S. attorneys they fired to tell the story of the purge that has prompted demands for the ouster of Attorney General Alberto Gonzales.

The voice vote to authorize the panel to issue subpoenas amounts to insurance against the possibility that Gonzales could retract his permission to let the aides testify voluntarily, or impose strict conditions.

The committee also postponed for a week a vote on whether to authorize subpoenas of top aides to President Bush who were involved in the eight firings, including political adviser Karl Rove, former White House Counsel Harriet Miers and deputy White House Counsel William K. Kelley.

The committee approved subpoena power over key Justice Department officials involved in the firings: Michael Elston, Kyle Sampson, Monica Goodling, Bill Mercer and Mike Battle.

Harriet Miers fired investigator in 1997 to cover Bush draft-dodge

by Greg Palast
from the original reports for BBC Television and the Guardian (UK)

The Mister Big behind the scandal of George Bush’s firing of US Attorneys is not a ‘mister’ at all. The House Judiciary Committee has released White House emails indicating that the political operative who ordered the hit on prosecutors too honest for their own good was Harriet Miers, one-time legal counsel to the President.[1]

But this is not the first time that Miers has fired investigators to protect Mr. Bush.

In 1999, while investigating Governor George Bush of Texas for the Guardian papers of Britain, I obtained an extraordinary, and extraordinarily confidential, memo to the US Attorney’s office in Austin. It disclosed that, in 1997, Governor Bush secretly suggested to the chairwoman of the Texas Lottery Commission that she grant a contract to the client of a Bush ally.

The Governor’s back-door demand to the Lottery chairwoman was not so easy. Bush wanted the Lottery to grant a multi-billion dollar contract to GTech Corporation. But GTech hadn’t even bid on the contract - and a winner was already announced.

There was only way for the Chairwoman to carry out the fix: fire the director of the Lottery who had discouraged GTech from bidding because of its history of corruption.

The Chairwoman, Harriet Miers, did the deed: fired the Lottery director; Miers then ignored the winning bid — and gave Bush’s favored company the contract, no bidding, in perpetuity.

Good afternoon to everyone. I hope the Sen. Leahy does not weaken re: his statement about issuing subpoenas for Rove and the other more first-tier folks in this mess. I wonder why the statements about Rove seem a little weaker today than yesterday.

Also, does anyone here have any information about where Fitzgerald was on that hit list. I saw an article somewhere (should have bookmarked it) that whatever Meirs and Sampson wanted to do with him was redacted on the list that was released. Does anyone know more? Thanks.

Hi Roisin Dubh!

I do know that Hastert wanted Fitz gone because Fitz was taking down the Republican governor and working over the Mayor of Chicago. Plus, he indicted several political fundraisers for the GOP! They didn't like that much! (Money is everything to the evildoers!)

I'll have to do some research on this though because I'm not exactly sure where Fitz was on that "hit list"! If you find it again, before I find anything, please let me know. ;)

Hi Prissy!

Thanks for the article..I finally got a chance to relax long enough to read it! ;)

Dubya loves all that worship him! LOLMAO
