Unreleased E-Mails Contradict White House Assertions That the Firings Originated With Harriet Miers

March 15, 2007 — New unreleased e-mails from top administration officials show that the idea of firing all 93 U.S. attorneys was raised by White House adviser Karl Rove in early January 2005, indicating Rove was more involved in the plan than the White House previously acknowledged.

The e-mails also show that Attorney General Alberto Gonzales discussed the idea of firing the attorneys en masse while he was still White House counsel, weeks before he was confirmed as attorney general.

The e-mails directly contradict White House assertions that the notion originated with recently departed White House counsel Harriet Miers, and was her idea alone.

Two independent sources in a position to know have described the contents of the e-mail exchange, which could be released as early as Friday. They put Rove at the epicenter of the imbroglio and raise questions about Gonzales' explanations of the matter.

Gonzales got to experience the American dream in a big way - here's a link to his background -

http://www.cnn.com/2007/POLITICS/03/14/gonzales.profile/index.html

But now this Administration needs another scapegoat and he will be it. For years he did Bush's bidding because he got taken to the bigtime. I'm sure his loyalty was genuine and if he shuts up and goes quietly he'll get a cushy job back home.

Must be terrifying to be a staff member of this team. Where will the axe fall next?

Dum da dum dum...

Sorry, I can't see Rove as a scapegoat at all. He's got fingerprints all over everything and as usually happens, he got caught.

The Republicans however, will be praying at his birthplace for years in his honor.

The axe will fall on anyone they decide should be responsible for some other bonehead screwup by the Preznitwit. Face it, jobs in this white house have a fairly short shelf life.

Firedoglake has a fantastic post by Looseheadprop LooseHead Thoughts: Rule 6(e) laying out how Waxman needs to proceed in getting information from Fitzgerald.

A snippet: "This is where things might get good. You may recall that there is some significant information that came to the investigation outside of the presence of the grand jury and not as a direct result of a grand jury subpoena. So, even if the material was later presented to the grand jury, if you knew of its existence from another source you could ask for it. Shorter version- you can't ask for "everything you presented to the grand jury but got from a none grand jury method", but you can ask for "the notes of that interview I know you had with so and so before the grand jury was empanelled." See the difference? It's a little subtle, but very significant."

Well worth reading, as well as the comments, which include good information on how we, the people can support Waxman's efforts.

And thanks for the heads-up re: the new posting on the PJF blog. I wish the creator of that blog well. The expressions of outrage and the firm belief that justice will prevail, as expressed by many of the Justice Bloggers (esp. remember one short exchange w/SPB) moved my out of my cynicism and despair, and into constructive engagement. I appreciate all of you, and I appreciate the sacrifices made by the creator of the blog. I have a feeling the PJF blog transformed the blogger as much as it transformed many of us.

And thanks to S-Q, GEF, Capt. Kit, Quzi for this blog.

Well said, roisin. I was a lurker at the PJF site and loved it. Since the party moved over here, I'm following it. It's good to know that truth and justice are not lost ideals.

Thanks to you all.
