How Lobbyists Wrote and Bought the Rx Drug Bill

by S-Q @ 2:40 PM MDT

"The pharmaceutical lobbyists wrote the bill," says [Republican Congressman Walter] Jones. "The bill was over 1,000 pages. And it got to the members of the House that morning, and we voted for it at about 3 a.m. in the morning….I've been in politics for 22 years, and it was the ugliest night I have ever seen in 22 years."

60 Minutes tells the story of how pharmaceutical industry lobbyists literally wrote the historic Medicare Prescription Drug Bill and twisted arms to get the necessary votes to have it passed in the middle of the night. Correspondent Steve Kroft documents how many of the congressmen and staffers who worked on the bill later went on to work for the drug companies their legislation helped enrich.

Gorporate Coverment must be held accountable. The hippies in the 1960's used to take a pinch out of the bag, and sell the rest for no profit, but not these crooks. They want ten times...a hundred times what drugs are worth, and they all get part of the action. When they get jail time they should be put where air has to be piped in to them...G;

Geezerpower - I'm guessing the day of reckoning will come. The AARP recommended passage because they felt it was better than nothing. I'm guessing they got a piece of lobbyists pie, too. But if their members get riled, they'll have to turn and say they were mislead and then watch the fireworks.

It's not new information, I heard it during the debate. It just takes 60 Minutes to give things traction.

I'm guessing more incumbents will go down in the next election. Good riddance!
