SCOTUS: Big Environmental Loss For Bush

by S-Q @ 9:23 AM MDT

Boston Globe

In a defeat for the Bush administration, the US Supreme Court ruled Monday that greenhouse gases are a pollutant and ordered federal environmental officials to re-examine their refusal to limit emissions of the gases from cars and trucks.

The justices' 5-4 decision did not go as far as to require the US Environmental Protection Agency to regulate greenhouse gases, such as carbon dioxide. Rather, the court directed the agency to take a new look at the gases. If it determines they cause global warming and therefore human harm, the agency should regulate them under the federal Clean Air Act, or provide a reasonable explanation why it will not, the court said.

The case, brought by 12 states and 13 environmental groups and argued by the Massachusetts Attorney General's office, is the high court's first decision on global warming and is expected to have far-reaching implications for regulating greenhouse gases in the United States.

I hope this is the first step to slowing down the climate change.. although, severe damage has already been done to our planet!

Hi, S-Q. I saw this TV programme a couple of weeks ago on Channel 4 called The Great Global Warming Swindle. Basically, its maker argues that global warming is a natural, rather than man-made phenomenon.

I found it quite convincing and posted it on my blogsite.

Are you green? How many flights have you taken in the last year? Feeling guilty about all those unnecessary car journeys? Well, maybe ... there's no need to feel bad. According to a group of scientists brought together by documentary-maker Martin Durkin, if the planet is heating up, it isn't your fault and there's nothing you can do about it. We've almost begun to take it for granted that climate change is a man-made phenomenon. But just as the environmental lobby think they've got our attention, a group of naysayers have emerged to slay the whole premise of global warming.

Good post SQ

It does look like a start, but why would scrotum label green house gasses as a pollutent? Geez..Is the justice system so oblique that they can't just go to the heart of the matter? I guess the good news is that maybe SCOTUS believes that global warming actually exists...

Having been concerned, about this, the single most important threat to life as we know it, for over 40 years, I have to say..."We need to do better".

Hi Anthony!

No, it isn't natural. Los Angeles has been warmer than ever..over the past 130 years anyway! It's man made and fossil fuels are the main contributors.

Thanks Geezer! ;)

Yep, SCOTUS finally knows they had better do something or be held accountable for not doing so!
